In 18th century the Scottish Broadsword was a popular military weapon. It saw widespread use throughout both Scotland and England. At our broadsword lessons in Glasgow, we can teach you all about fighting this type of sword, and related other Scottish fighting arts.
The broadsword is a weapon that is held in one hand with a protective basket covering the hand. The blade is usually 30 inches long and double-edged (so that strikes can be made with both the front and back edges), with a sharp point to enable thrusts. Broadswords were not particularly heavy, with most weighing between 2-3 lbs, and were balanced to allow skilful use in both the cut and thrust.
As well as learning how to fight with the broadsword by itself, we teach the use of the broadsword with the targe, the round shield of the Highlanders. We also teach elements of staff fighting, bayonet fencing, the game of singlestick, the self-defence method of the smallsword… Our range of Scottish fighting arts is quite extensive!
