Historical Fencing Northern Ireland

Historical Fencing N.I. was formed in 2015 to promote the training of HEMA in Northern Ireland, and to support the creation of new clubs and training groups through outreach schemes, demonstrations, and workshops.

Day and Time:

Currently HFNI is running no classes, but regular workshops should be announced soon.

Belfast, Northern Ireland

Disciplines Studied:

The current primary areas of study are early German longsword, rondel dagger, and the messer. As HFNI aims to promote all forms of HEMA, the regular workshops will also feature guest instructors from other HEMA disciplines to aid in the formation of new study groups.

Club Membership and Fees:

Anyone over the 18 may become a member of this club. Those over 16 but under 18 may join if accompanied by a parent or guardian to training sessions.

The instructors at HFNI have undergone Child Protection Training, and outreach and workshops aimed at younger ages are planned, and will be announced as these are put in place.

The price of club membership is £25 per year, consisting of two costs:
- £10 club membership fee;
- £15 AHA subscription (this fee does not apply if you already have a valid and up-to-date AHA subscription).

Workshop fees will be announced when the workshops themselves are announced.

Club Uniform (and what to bring with you):

The club uniform consists of loose-fitting black trousers (not denim) and a plain white t-shirt. White t-shirts with AHA logos are allowed (and are available to purchase here through Corsair's Wares) but otherwise the only t-shirts allowed are plain white t-shirts with no logos, colours, images or text upon them.

We request that the only people wearing black t-shirts are those who are able to teach the discipline that will be taught at the session, who may be called upon to help with coaching or instruction. If you are not able to provide instruction at the necessary level for the discipline in question, please wear a white t-shirt to the session, rather than black.

Visitors and guests from other clubs are encouraged to wear their own club uniform to our training sessions.

Indoor shoes are required. Outdoor boots, formal shoes, and other footwear that is likely to leave marks on the hall floor should not be worn. Please note that footwear IS required and that training barefoot (or just in socks) is not an option.

Additionally, you should bring with you a bottle of water and a pair of thin gloves (to help protect your hand and wrist from chafing on the sword). If you suffer from asthma then you should bring your inhaler with you; if you need other medication then you should contact the club instructor through the contact form below to see if there may be any problems.
