The Vanguard Centre is a full time training venue, run directly by the Academy of Historical Arts, conveniently located in Glasgow city centre. Its aim is to engage with the general community in the area. The group offers historical fencing tuition, and is blessed with several qualified instructors, so participants will always have an opportunity to practise with well trained and experienced teachers.
For more information about The Vanguard Centre, please look at our classes in Glasgow pages.
We run a range of classes and activities every week. Beginners are welcome to come to any of our sessions, at any time - just drop in, and we will do our best to make you feel at home! more advanced students will have plenty to learn from our sessions too, as our instructors are trained to deliver quality tuition to students and practitioners at many levels of experience and skill.
Our regular drop-in sessions cost £7 per session, although we offer multi-session passes to bring down the cost of individual sessions. For more information, please see the Attendance Fees page for our classes in Glasgow.
Our address is 63 Commerce Street, Glasgow, G5 8AD. Click here for a map of the area, including walking directions from Glasgow Central Station.
The warehouse is on the ground floor and there are no staircases in the venue, making it completely wheelchair accessible. There is a disabled toilet with plenty of space. In general, we have done our best to comply with the Equality Act 2010 and the Disability Discrimination Act 1995 to make the venue accessible and usable by people suffering from disabilities.
The club uniform consists of loose-fitting black trousers (not denim) and a plain white t-shirt. White t-shirts with AHA logos are allowed (and are available to purchase here through Corsair's Wares) but otherwise the only t-shirts allowed are plain white t-shirts with no logos, colours, images or text upon them.
We request that the only people wearing black t-shirts are those who are able to teach the discipline that will be taught at the session, who may be called upon to help with coaching or instruction. If you are not able to provide instruction at the necessary level for the discipline in question, please wear a white t-shirt to the session, rather than black.
Visitors and guests from other clubs are encouraged to wear their own club uniform to our training sessions.
Indoor shoes are required. Outdoor boots, formal shoes, and other footwear that is likely to leave marks on the hall floor should not be worn. Please note that footwear IS required and that training barefoot (or just in socks) is not an option.
Additionally, you should bring with you a bottle of water and a pair of thin gloves (to help protect your hand and wrist from chafing on the sword). If you suffer from asthma then you should bring your inhaler with you; if you need other medication then you should contact the club instructor through the contact form below to see if there may be any problems.
At our centre, we have an onsite shop for protective equipment, training gear, books, and other related items that will be helpful during your participation in our activities. Having the shop onsite at the centre means that you can look at the different items, try on different sizes, and see first-hand what solution works best for you. Our staff are experienced practitioners and instructors in their own right, so they will be able to recommend the items that they believe will work best for you and that would be most suitable for the type and intensity of the activities in which you will be participating.
If you would like to come and visit us to see what items we have available, or to try on different sizes, please just drop us a message using the contact form at the bottom of the page and get in touch to arrange a mutually convenient time and date.
If you would like to arrange some private tuition with one of our staff members, you are welcome to use The Vanguard Centre for such activities at a mutually convenient time. We do try not to schedule private tuition during regular lesson slots, but if you get in touch with us, we will do our best to make a helpful arrangement.
If you would like to hire this space to run an activity of some description, we would be delighted to hear from you, and hopefully we can accommodate your group and activity.
