Sensitive Topics

Discussion of Politics and Religion

In the Academy there are a lot of people who hold very wide ranging opinions and perspectives on topics such as politics and religion, as well as a host of other contentious and potentially divisive issues. In an effort to foster a friendly and welcome atmosphere at our clubs, at our events and on our online groups, forums and discussion sites, the Academy policy is that sensitive topics (especially politics and religion) should be avoided wherever possible.

That is not to say that these issues cannot be tackled in a mature and responsible fashion. For example, on Encased in Steel there are several blog articles that deal with the concept of religion and politics throughout history, as part of an effort to study these concepts and understand how they influenced social, economic and military contexts in the past. What should be avoided is entering a conversation with a very fixed point of view and giving assertions or statements that make other people feel uncomfortable.
